I founded Visionsport International in 1990, during the formative years of satellite television and the early commercial era of English football. What began as an independent production company soon became one of the pioneers of club-focused football broadcasting.
During the 1990s we employed full-time staff and a nationwide network of freelance crews, supplying programming and host broadcast services to rights holders across the UK and internationally. In 1997, with backing from Comcast and Middlesbrough FC, I launched Boro TV — the first dedicated club television channel in the UK.
By the end of the decade, my focus shifted toward original documentary production. In 1999 I produced, directed and narrated Wild Thing — a 13-part series that became Animal Planet’s first European commission and was subsequently licensed to more than 65 countries worldwide.
Alongside documentary production, I built and monetised a substantial football archive, securing a six-figure licensing agreement with the Premier League and delivering the sport’s first national newspaper DVD promotions with the Daily Mirror. Further commissions followed with major distributors and broadcasters.
From 2010 to 2019, I produced more than a dozen documentary films and special projects for Manchester United’s global channel MUTV, filming and interviewing Cristiano Ronaldo, Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and Sir Alex Ferguson among others.
Over the past decade I have also worked as a freelance producer for BBC Sport, regularly edit-producing Match of the Day — the programme once presented by my late uncle Tony Gubba, whose career flourished during my own early years in broadcast journalism.
Following the closure of MUTV’s documentary department in 2019, I built my own digital publishing platform under the #manutdthereligion banner. By 2026 this independent network reached over 6.5 million monthly views on Facebook and more than a quarter of a million views on YouTube in a 28-day period — achieved without reliance on daily clickbait, instead focusing on legacy storytelling and documentary-style features.
In 2025 I expanded into music production under the Gubbmeister Music label, combining lyric writing with AI-assisted composition. I now distribute globally across major streaming platforms while also composing original soundtracks for my films and documentaries.
Today
I operate independently under the Gubbmeister Films banner, developing and directing feature-length documentaries and mini-series while collaborating with established production partners. Current projects include a documentary for Amazon presented by Wendy and Anthea Turner, alongside projects in development with Krafty Entertainment.
